Children & Babies in the Gym Policy
At Homegrown Fitness, we understand that childcare can be a barrier to movement, and we aim to be as inclusive and supportive as possible – while also prioritizing safety for everyone in the space.
Homegrown Fitness is a family-friendly space, and there may be babies and children present in some classes. We’re committed to creating an environment that is welcoming to parents and respectful of everyone’s training experience.
General Policy
Babies and children may be present in the gym during classes or personal training sessions only when certain safety conditions are met
This is not a childcare service, and parents or caregivers are fully responsible for supervising their child at all times.
Instructors should not be relied on to care for babies or children during a class - their responsibility is instructing the class.
Parents, caregivers and all participants should be able to participate in class without frequent disruption. If a baby or child becomes very distressed or disruptive, we ask that the caregiver step outside with them until things settle.
Safety First
Because our classes involve barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, and other heavy equipment:
Children must remain off the training floor and out of lifting areas at all times.
Babies must be:
In a carrier worn by the parent or
Placed in a secure container (car seat, stroller, playpen) positioned away from equipment and walkways or
Behind a barrier in the front seating area of the gym.
Mobile children must stay seated or contained and may not run, climb, or play with equipment.
If a child’s presence creates a safety concern for themselves, the parent, or other members, the coach may ask the caregiver to step out or leave the class early. This decision will always be made with safety in mind and we appreciate your understanding.
Each coach has the discretion to limit or decline children in class based on overall safety considerations.
If you have questions about whether a specific class or situation is appropriate for bringing your child, please reach out to us ahead of time.
Creating an Inclusive Environment
Fitness spaces often aren’t safe or inclusive — especially for people in large bodies, marginalized identities, or those who have been excluded from traditional wellness culture. At Homegrown Fitness, we are actively working to do things differently.
Our goal is to shift fitness culture away from judgment and hierarchy, and toward a more neutral autonomy-based culture. To support that, we ask everyone in our community to keep the following guidelines in mind.
Body Neutral, Fat Positive, Anti-Diet Culture
Homegrown Fitness is a body-neutral, fat-positive, anti-diet culture space. We do not promote weight loss, body transformation, or appearance-based goals. We aim to create a space where folks can explore their own strength and capacity without any pressure to change their bodies.
We do not create hierarchies around body size, shape, ability, or appearance. All bodies are welcome, and all bodies belong here.
Mindful Language
Language matters. To help keep this space safe for everyone, we ask that members avoid:
Talking about bodies (your own or others’) in ways that involve judgment, comparison, or evaluation
Commenting on weight loss or weight gain
Framing food or movement as “earned,” “burned,” “good,” or “bad”
We honour and value individual autonomy when it comes to making personal choices around health and well-being. While we fully respect those choices, we do not engage in conversations about dieting, weight loss, or body change within the gym, in order to keep this space supportive for all. We know these comments are often unintentional and widely normalized in fitness and wellness culture. Our intention is not to assign harm, but to set shared boundaries that protect the well-being of our community.
If body-focused conversations comes up, our team may gently interrupt, ask for a rephrase, redirect the conversation, or remind you of our shared values and community agreements.
This is an ongoing practice. We’re committed to listening, learning, and adjusting as we grow. Please reach out with any concerns you may have.
By being part of this community, you’re helping us build a different type of gym rooted in care, respect, and inclusion. Your body is welcome here. And we’re really glad you’re part of Homegrown Fitness.
