Learn to Lift: A Beginner-Friendly Path Into Strength Training
(And Why It Matters More Than You Think)
If youβve ever walked past a gym, peeked inside, and felt both wildly intimidated and secretly a little curious about what it would be like to be in thereβ¦
Strength training can feel like stepping into a whole new universe: mysterious equipment, people who seem to know exactly where everything is, what those weird torture devices do.
When I speak to folks who are new to strength training, the number one thing I hear is βIβm scared Iβll do something wrong and hurt myselfβ.
Fair! It makes sense that you have questions. That you donβt know where to start. And that youβre worried about starting without enough support.
Strength training is a skill, and in the same way that you took a course to learn how to drive your car, you also deserve lessons in how to lift weights.
But here is what I wish more folks knew: you donβt need to be strong to start strength trainingβyou get strong by starting.
And starting doesnβt have to feel intimidating. In fact, it shouldnβt.
Whether your goal is to feel stronger in daily life, support your mental health, carry your toddler without wincing, build muscle, prevent injury, or simply discover a new way of moving your bodyβ strength training is one of the most impactful things you can do for yourself.
But the hardest part for most people?
Getting started.
Why βJust Start Liftingβ Isnβt Helpful
If you Google βbeginner strength training,β you get 400 million results - most of them contradicting one another.
You must lift heavy! Start light! Use machines! For Godβs sake DONβT use machines! Itβs enough to make anyone close the tab and walk away.
And while itβs easy to say βJust start,β I know thatβs not helpful when you genuinely donβt know how.
What you need is someone who will walk you through the process β¦without assuming you know how to pick up a weight.
Thatβs exactly why we created Learn to Lift, our introductory workshop at Homegrown Fitness.
But before we get into the details, letβs talk about what actually makes strength training feel accessibleβand what most beginners truly need.
What New Lifters Really Need
Most beginners donβt need a complicated program or fancy gear. What they do need is:
A clear foundation
Not just what to do - but why. Understanding movement patterns, equipment, and basic principles builds confidence fast. If you understand the principles behind why you are lifting the way you are, youβre much more likely to stick with it.
A supportive environment
Not a huge gym floor where youβre secretly trying to copy the person next to you. Somewhere you can ask questions, be coached, and not feel judged. Where you can show up in sweats and an oversized t shirt and feel right at home.
Permission to be a beginner
Every strong person youβve ever seen was once where you are now. You need permission to be a beginner - to ask questions that feel silly (but arenβt), to have someone literally explain to you what a dumbbell is and how itβs different from a barbell.
Practical, hands-on experience
Reading about how to do a deadlift isnβt the same as feeling one with proper guidance.
These pieces come together beautifully when you have intentional instruction and a welcoming space for you to mess up and try again. This is exactly why Learn to Lift exists.
