Learn to Lift: A Beginner-Friendly Path Into Strength Training

(And Why It Matters More Than You Think)

If you’ve ever walked past a gym, peeked inside, and felt both wildly intimidated and secretly a little curious about what it would be like to be in there…

Strength training can feel like stepping into a whole new universe: mysterious equipment, people who seem to know exactly where everything is, what those weird torture devices do.

When I speak to folks who are new to strength training, the number one thing I hear is “I’m scared I’ll do something wrong and hurt myself”.

Fair! It makes sense that you have questions. That you don’t know where to start. And that you’re worried about starting without enough support.

Strength training is a skill, and in the same way that you took a course to learn how to drive your car, you also deserve lessons in how to lift weights.

But here is what I wish more folks knew: you don’t need to be strong to start strength training—you get strong by starting.

And starting doesn’t have to feel intimidating. In fact, it shouldn’t.

Whether your goal is to feel stronger in daily life, support your mental health, carry your toddler without wincing, build muscle, prevent injury, or simply discover a new way of moving your body— strength training is one of the most impactful things you can do for yourself.

But the hardest part for most people?
Getting started.

Why “Just Start Lifting” Isn’t Exactly Helpful

If you Google “beginner strength training,” you get 400 million results - most of them contradicting one another.

You must lift heavy! Start light! Use machines! For God’s sake DON’T use machines! It’s enough to make anyone close the tab and walk away.

And while it’s easy to say “Just start,” I know that’s not helpful when you genuinely don’t know how.

What you need is someone who will walk you through the process …without assuming you know how to pick up a weight.

That’s exactly why we created Learn to Lift, our 90-minute intro workshop at Homegrown Fitness.

But before we get into the details, let’s talk about what actually makes strength training feel accessible—and what most beginners truly need.

What New Lifters Really Need

Most beginners don’t need a complicated program or fancy gear. What they do need is:

A clear foundation

Not just what to do - but why. Understanding movement patterns, equipment, and basic principles builds confidence fast. If you understand the principles behind why you are lifting the way you are, you’re much more likely to stick with it.

A supportive environment

Not a huge gym floor where you’re secretly trying to copy the person next to you. Somewhere you can ask questions, be coached, and not feel judged. Where you can show up in sweats and an oversized t shirt and feel right at home.

Permission to be a beginner

Every strong person you’ve ever seen was once where you are now. You need permission to be a beginner - to ask questions that feel silly (but aren’t), to have someone literally explain to you what a dumbbell is and how it’s different from a barbell.

Practical, hands-on experience

Reading about how to do a deadlift isn’t the same as feeling one with proper guidance.

These pieces come together beautifully when you have intentional instruction and a welcoming space for you to mess up and try again. This is exactly why Learn to Lift exists.
